If you have ever heard the whistle going off in town, here is a quick explanation of what the horn means.

4-4 - If the whistle blows 4-4 that means that the fire station is empty. Whitman Fire frequently "dumps out" and leaves the fire station empty. No one to answer the phone or radio. Whitman runs two ambulances, two engines, a ladder, a rescue and a forest fire with a total of 4-firefighters and 1-officer on duty. Many times we'll receive two or more calls at once and will have to leave the station empty.

6-6 - If the whistle blows 6-6 this means that we have a report or a confirmation of a building fire in the town. This signals off duty members and call-firefighters to either go directly to the fire scene or to the station, to get more fire apparatus.

9-9 - If the whistle blows 9-9 this means that a neighboring town has requested a piece of fire apparatus to their town because they have a fire. This box is not struck for a mutual aid ambulance run.
